"What raised the ante for Playing With Time is hinted at in the album title. Unlike many rock based guitar albums where the emphasis rests purely with the virtuosity of the guitar playing, Stephen has incorporated his progressive/fusion influences to offer a varied accompaniment to his primary instrument.  I loved the guitar tone, the fact that Playing With Time wasn't just a display of guitar histrionics, but rather a careful mixture of well constructed melodic compositions with "in context" guitar playing." says Bob Mulvey from DPRP

The New York International Music Festival officially selected him to represent the state of  <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />New Hampshire in which he performed live at the Cutting Room to select A&R representatives. He has appeared in a range of venues from the Southern  New England area (The Wolfs Den ,  Hounds Head, and Sylvester’s) to performances in California (The Troubador,  & Gazzaris, both from West Hollywood, CA).

At the age of 5 years old he took Classical lessons. Later he took up lessons with Mr. Keith Moreau out of Agawam, MA. In pursuing his strong interest in music he attended open classes at the Conservatory of Music in Springfield, MA. Here he took composition, advanced composition and Music Theory, Jazz, Blues and of course rock.

His current releases are “Trial” (2003) and “Playing With Time” (2006). This new CD has 7 songs. Each song is a movement of a larger piece. On both of these CDs he plays the lead guitar, drums, bass and keyboard. Most of his songs start from a small strain of sound and a simple idea. The final pieces that you hear are created by overlays.

Sifu Stephen Doe - Playing With Time at mswings.com

This is Stephen's second disc, which he has been working on in the 3 years since his first disc was being sent out. On this disc Stephen has written the music and played all the instruments himself.

"Awakening" is a good opening track which breaks off rather suddenly into "Breathe". "Breathe" is a slower more melodic track reminding me of Neil Zaza. The only negative element is the drum sound which seems a little prominent. "Questions" starts off with some piano and is a transition piece between the start and the rest of the album. "Con-fusion" is a more moody and complex track whose tempo changes give it a progressive feel - a bit like Dream Theater meets Rush. "Hidden Time" features a style that will be familiar to fans of guitar instrumental albums as it is inspired by Steve Vai. A good track, although I have to admit that although Steve's work with DLR and Alkatrazz is in my collection, his solo work hasn't made it there yet.

"My Self Reflection" is a track that Stephen rates as his favourite so far. It is a long track featuring a progressive feel with plenty of mood changes and even some classical guitar. A great showpiece for Stephen's talent, but it is actually Con-fusion that is the standout track for me. All guitarists seem to love the blues and Stephen is no exception with an adept journey into the genre on closing track "Strat-o-spheric".

This a good demonstration of Stephen's talents.

Uncovering Guitar Potential

Sifu Stephen Doe

Genius By Virtuosity

Manchester, New Hampshire shredder Sifu Stephen Doe
submitted his seven-song instrumental CD-R, Playing
With Time,
a full-out assault on the fretboard. "I feel that it
is truly an exhibition of genius by virtuosity,"
states Doe, who plays all the instruments on the
album. A highly skilled axeman, Doe delivers
incredibly fast lines alongside his backing tracks,
which probably should be recorded by a full band, for
maximum impact. He's got all the neo-classical and
shred skills down pat, which are put to good use on
tracks such as "Con-Fusion" and "Awakening", which
feature some furious playing techniques. All that's
needed here is production and arrangement help, and
some like-minded, powerhouse musicians to contribute
on the recording end of things - you should have a
winner.

Lest you think sifu is just another ingredient in moo
goo gai pan, Doe has been studying classical guitar,
music theory, composition, advanced composition, jazz,
blues, and rock, since he was 5 years old. For 5 years
he played in a band named Wildside. While
experimenting with various styles and beats, he found
new inspiration. Doe discovered the magic of
progressive/rock and instrumental music, and found he
enjoys writing aggressive songs with a melodic flair.
He plays drums, bass, and keyboards, out of a constant
need to write and record. His "Trial" demo, recorded
in 2003, consisted of 10 songs. Doe has built a strong
blend across diverse musical styles, and prefers the
challenge of off-tempo pieces with several key and
instrumental transitions.

Doe's ultimate goal is to get signed by a label. He is
looking to get his music on the radio a much as
possible. He would also like to do as many live
interviews and connect with as many fans as he can.

The Review:

Playing with Time" is Stephen Doe's second demo CD . Like his first CD, Stephen plays all instruments himself, but upon hearing the music you can tell the guitar is his main choice of instrument. Stephen hails from Manchester, NH and can be put, guitar playing wise, in the same category as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and even Allan Holdsworth in parts.

Just remember before putting the CD into your player of choice, this is a demo and really can’t be compared to a finished studio product. Just like the first demo, the real missing ingredient in Stephen’s music is an acoustic drummer then great compositions would come alive. Other than that the music on Playing With Time is some of the most beautiful and endearing I’ve heard from a rock guitarist in ages.

If you like the aforementioned players, then you must keep an eye out for Stephen Doe. I believe he can be the next big thing in instrumental guitar rock music. Stephen has a page of at MySpace so you can hear for yourself.
